PLATE 180
Bringing street food to an at home outdoor cooking environment
What does street food offer?
Street food consists of ready-to-eat foods or drinks sold by a hawker, or vendor, in a street or other public place, such as at a market or fair. It is often sold from a portable food booth, food cart, or food truck and meant for immediate consumption
ENVIRONMENT - groups of people, with one or two making food and others moving around food
DESIGN - portable and can hold substantial amount of things for materials, tools, and prepped & non-prepped food
TIME- is quick, maybe even easy, to prepare/make
How can I offer a variety of food to be made on a single cooking surface?
Cooking Environment
Imagine having the capability of cooking all of these foods on a single cooking surface at home with friends and family outdoors.
Breakfast
Egg’s, Bacon, French Toast, Pancakes, Waffles
Lunch
Grilled Cheese, Sandwiches, Crispy Fish, Chili Dogs
Dinner
Burgers, Crab Cakes, Burritos, Ribs, Quesadillas
With the aim of bringing variety inspired by street food to an at home outdoor cooking environment, I decided to focus my design on a grill.
Ideation
I began to explore different ways multiple cooking surfaces could be combined into one plate for a single grill. I took into consideration grill grates and griddles as the two surfaces I could work with.
Griddle/Grill Grate Combination
Here I began to play off of the idea of having griddle and grill grate inserts for customization or a plate that could be flipped over for a cast iron grate or stainless-steel grate with a stainless-steel griddle on either side.
At this point in the ideation stage, I wanted to explore and figure out how handles/hinges would work & location of them, how the inserts can slot into the main frame of the design, and the overall form of the grill top.
With a more resolved direction, I decided to make scale models.
With carboard, making this scale model gave me a better idea of the actual size I was working with and how my design choices and features would look like. This lead me closer to figuring out how it could all come together.
